FAQ

Frequently asked questions about ColorBread

Below are some common questions about using ColorBread.

What is ColorBread?

ColorBread is a tool for generating and managing color systems for design projects.

Starting from a single Base Color, it automatically builds structured color palettes, semantic color roles, and Figma variables or styles.

This allows designers to create a complete color system much faster than building it manually.

Do I need design system experience to use ColorBread?

No.

ColorBread is designed for both beginners and experienced designers.
You can generate a structured color system simply by choosing a Base Color and applying a recipe.

Advanced users can also fine-tune palette behavior through adjustments such as lightness, chroma, and smoothness.

Does ColorBread work inside Figma?

Yes.

ColorBread is a Figma plugin.
It runs directly inside your Figma file and can generate:

  • Color palettes
  • Figma Variables
  • Color Styles
  • Semantic color structures

All generated assets can be used immediately in your design.

What happens when I click Bake?

The Bake action saves the current palette or recipe into the ColorBread Library.

Depending on your settings, it can also create:

  • Figma Variables
  • Figma Color Styles
  • Linked semantic color structures

Once baked, the palette becomes reusable and easier to manage.

Can I reuse palettes in other Figma files?

Yes.

Palettes and recipes saved in the Library can be reused in other files.

You can transfer library data between files using the Save & Load feature available in the Settings panel.

What is a Recipe in ColorBread?

A Recipe defines how palette colors are mapped into semantic roles.

For example:

  • Brand
  • Background
  • Surface
  • Text
  • Border

Instead of manually assigning colors across UI elements, a recipe automatically organizes the palette into a structured system.

Does ColorBread support light and dark mode?

Yes.

Recipes can automatically generate color mappings for both Light Mode and Dark Mode.

This helps designers maintain consistent color behavior across different themes without rebuilding the system manually.

Why does ColorBread use OKLCH instead of RGB or HSL?

OKLCH is a color model that more closely reflects how humans perceive color.

Compared to RGB or HSL adjustments, OKLCH allows ColorBread to generate:

  • smoother color transitions
  • more balanced color scales
  • more predictable color adjustments

This makes it particularly useful for building design systems.

Does ColorBread check color accessibility?

Yes.

ColorBread displays WCAG and APCA contrast information while generating palettes.

This helps designers evaluate:

  • text readability
  • color contrast
  • accessibility compliance

It makes it easier to build interfaces that are readable and accessible.

Do I need a license to use ColorBread?

Some features are available for free.

However, advanced functionality requires a license.
You can activate your license in the Settings section of the plugin.

Can I use ColorBread on multiple devices?

Yes.

You can activate your license on another device by entering the license key again.

However, the number of active devices may be limited depending on the license policy.

What happens if I cancel my subscription?

If you cancel your subscription, your premium access will remain active until the end of the current billing period.

After that, your account will automatically revert to the free plan.

Does ColorBread change my Base Color automatically?

No.

ColorBread keeps your selected Base Color unchanged.

The palette is generated around that color while respecting the designer’s original choice.
